William Shakespeare wrote The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, sometimes known as just Hamlet (/ˈhaemlɪt/). It was composed sometime between 1599 and 1601. With 29,551 words, it is Shakespeare’s longest play. The play, which is set in Denmark, tells the story of Prince Hamlet’s attempts to get revenge on his uncle Claudius, who killed Hamlet’s father in order to take the throne and wed Hamlet’s mother. A plot that can be “seemingly endless retellings and adaptations by others” makes Hamlet one of the “most powerful and influential tragedies in the English language”.
