Vintage Original B&W Photo, the Battle of Prokhorov in 1943

The 5th Guards Tank Army headquarters summarized the combat losses of the formation for all five of its corps and minor units immediately under army headquarters from July 12 to July 16, 1943, in a document published on July 17. The following irrecoverable losses were listed in the document: 240 support vehicles, 222 T-34s, 89 T-70s, 12 Churchills, 8 SU-122s, and 3 SU-76s. There were no numbers for support vehicles in the paper, but it listed 143 T-34s, 56 T-70s, 7 Churchills, 3 SU-122s, and 3 SU-76s as damaged vehicles currently undergoing repair. 2,940 troop fatalities were listed in the record as killed in battle, 3,510 as injured in action, and 1,157 as missing in action. This adds up to 334 irreversible tank and self-propelled gun losses, plus a further 212 tank losses and self-propelled guns under repair, and 7,607 casualties. The historian Karl-Heinz Frieser argued that the majority of the losses reported in the document must have occurred on 12 July.
