Regardless of perspective, the Euro-Ural region is unquestionably the core of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union’s industrial base and granary, Eastern Europe, was home to the top five main cities in the 1959 census: Moscow, Leningrad, Kiev, Gorky, and Kharkiv. Ukraine is regarded as the granary and industrial heartland, if nothing else. Eastern Europe is deserving of the moniker “Soviet Union center.”
