September 1943 saw the liberation of Ukraine by Soviet forces. The German command attempted to drive the Soviet troops out of the river by concentrating sizable infantry, tank, and aircraft forces. The Red Army made an effort to hold onto, expand, and solidify its acquired bridgeheads. The Germans were unable to focus their resources on eliminating a sizable portion of the bridgeheads. Simultaneously, because of their tiny size, the Soviet troops had to battle hard to make them larger in order to get ready for the second phase of the Battle of the Dnieper. Both sides sustained significant casualties in the Battle of the Dnieper’s initial phase. The Soviet troops lost over 428 thousand soldiers in all.
The photograph remains in good condition, preserving its visual impact and historical significance despite signs of age and handling. The corners show wear and there are pinholes at the corners of the photograph, likely from previous display. These are minor but noteworthy for collectors concerned with preservation.
