Lucien Aigner, starting with a Brownie camera at age 9, evolved into a significant photojournalist. By 1926, he worked as a reporter and photographer for the Hungarian press group Az Est. Aigner’s use of a Leica camera facilitated natural light photography. His 1935 photograph of Benito Mussolini sneezing at the Stresa conference gained acclaim, featuring on Newsweek’s cover in 1940. Fleeing to the U.S. in 1941 to escape Nazi persecution, Aigner captured notable photos of Albert Einstein at Princeton, which Einstein himself considered the best of him. Aigner’s works are held in prestigious collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. As a contemporary of Hungarian photographers like Brassaï and Kertesz, Aigner both drew inspiration from and possibly influenced his peers.
