Using his Tokarev sidearm, Soviet troops are led by political officer Alexey Gordeevich Yeremenko against German forces during World War II. Just seconds after this picture was taken, he was shot. At the final minutes before his death, at the village of Khorosheye, near Woroschilowgrad, today’s Luhansk, Ukraine, he was rallying his soldiers to launch a counterattack on German lines. Only the image of the Red Flag above the Reichstag is more iconic from the Soviet Union during World War II.
