After being interned from facilities in the Emsland area, prisoners erected Sachsenhausen concentration camp during the summer of 1936. Established in July 1936, it was the first new concentration camp created after Reich Leader SS Heinrich Himmler was became Chief of the German Police. Conceived as the perfect concentration camp, representing the SS’s worldview via architecture, and meant to expose the internees to the organization’s total control both literally and metaphorically, it was designed by an SS architect.
