Tabu: A Story of the South Seas, also known simply as Tabu (pronounced [tapu]), is a 1931 American silent film directed by F. W. Murnau. It is a documentary divided into two chapters: the first, “Paradise,” shows the lives of two lovers on a South Seas island until they are forced to flee when the girl is chosen as a holy maid to the gods. The second part, “Paradise Lost,” recounts the couple’s existence on a colonized island and how they adapt to and are exploited by Western society. The title is inspired from the Polynesian idea of tapu (spelled tabu in Tongan prior to 1943), from which the English word “taboo” is derived.virgin.
