The meeting of Soviet and American forces along the Elbe River, close to Torgau, Germany, on April 25, 1945, was a significant turning point in the European theater of World War II. Due to their interactions, the two forces effectively divided Germany in half: the Soviet Union, moving from the east, and the United States, moving from the west. Although Elbe Day has never been observed as a national holiday in any nation, the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union gave this amicable meeting new significance in the years after 1945.
