Vintage Original B&W Photo, Civilians getting Water during the German Siege of Leningrad – 1942

Weary citizens attempt to obtain water during the 1942 German siege of Stalingrad. Approximately 500,000 civilians have died in the second year of the siege. The daily allotment of bread was raised to 300 grams for each youngster. A ration of 500 grams is permitted for adult workers per day. Limited supplies of frozen meals are only provided to vital industry workers and active military personnel. On Lake Ladoga, some food supplies are transported through the ice. But Nazi aircraft damage a lot of delivery cars.

This photograph is in good condition, bearing minor signs of age and use. There may be light scratches, slight fading, or minor corner wear, but it retains a strong visual impact and historical value. Additionally, there are pinholes in every corner and small dents present.

The photographer associated with Agence Novosti Presse is Vsevolod Sergeyevich Tarasevich (1919–1998). He was a renowned master of Soviet journalism known for his contributions to photography. Tarasevich began his career as a student photographer and later became a photo correspondent during World War II. In the 1960s, he joined the newly-founded Novosti Press Agency (APN) and received recognition, including the World Press Photo Prize in 1963. He continued his career in photojournalism, becoming the dean of the Photojournalism Department at the Institute of Journalism in Moscow. Tarasevich’s work remains celebrated in the field of photography.
