In order to create a defensive crescent in front of the city, a half million Muscovite men and women laid 185 miles of barbed wire, excavated 5,000 kilometers of ditches, tank traps, and chopped down trees.

The photographer associated with Agence Novosti Presse is Vsevolod Sergeyevich Tarasevich (1919–1998). He was a renowned master of Soviet journalism known for his contributions to photography. Tarasevich began his career as a student photographer and later became a photo correspondent during World War II. In the 1960s, he joined the newly-founded Novosti Press Agency (APN) and received recognition, including the World Press Photo Prize in 1963. He continued his career in photojournalism, becoming the dean of the Photojournalism Department at the Institute of Journalism in Moscow. Tarasevich’s work remains celebrated in the field of photography.
