Famous World War II image Raising a Flag above the Reichstag was captured on May 2, 1945, during the Battle of Berlin. It shows a Soviet soldier hoisting the Soviet Union flag above the Reichstag. The image gained international recognition as one of the most important and iconic pictures of World War II when it was reproduced in hundreds of newspapers. The names of the individuals in the shot and the photographer, Yevgeny Khaldei, were frequently contested due to the secrecy of Soviet media. It came to represent the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany. The Soviet Union dubbed the Battle of Berlin, also known as the Berlin Strategic assault Operation, the last great assault in the European theater of World War II. Due to the Vistula–Oder assault, which began on April 16, 1945, the Red Army was able to break through the German lines and move quickly—up to thirty to forty kilometers per day—westward across Germany. The attack resulted in one of the deadliest conflicts in history, the Battle of Berlin, which took place from late April 20, 1945, to early May 2.
