Captain Eugene Wilkinson flashed a message on January 17, 1955, that would eventually revolutionize the submarine industry forever. It said, “Under way on nuclear power.” Submarines that can go quicker for longer periods of time and wreak havoc for the anti-submarine weaponry of the day are definitely the way to go, as demonstrated by the sea testing and drills that followed. Strangely, the Soviet leadership had prohibited any research into the feasibility of creating a submarine reactor before this breakthrough because they believed it would delay the creation of the atomic bomb. But when the Nautilus began to pose such a threat and it became clear that this was more than a one-time endeavor, the Soviets recognized they too needed a boat to match. As a result of their intense interest in the program, the Soviet Union eventually convinced Joseph Stalin to build their own boat in 1952. At this point, it can be said that the Soviet Union fully realized the United States had a weapons carrier that could approach from under the Polar ice and threaten any coastline at any time, including the North of Russia. Additionally, it meant that their anti-submarine capabilities were completely nullified, causing the order to catch up and surpass.
