Vintage Original B&W Photo, the Demonstration of Workers in Krechtchatik, Kiev – 1977

Like many other Soviet cities, Kiev would have celebrated May Day, a significant public holiday, on May 1, 1977. Parades, protests, and acts of solidarity among laborers and the Communist Party were frequently held on this day. The protests were a planned occasion to express support for the Communist Party’s policies and the government, as well as a celebration of labor and workers’ accomplishments. As the main thoroughfare in Kiev and one of its most important thoroughfares, Kreschatik (Khreshchatyk) Street would normally have served as the hub of these protests. This roadway, lined with government offices, businesses, and cafes, would become a parade path for workers, students, and military groups to march. They frequently waved flags and banners honoring the power and cohesion of the Soviet Union.

The photograph remains in good condition, preserving its visual impact and historical significance despite signs of age and handling. Each corner of the photograph has pinholes, the bottom edge has a large tear which should be noted and there is a noticeable crease and some peeling in the bottom left area, which may need attention to prevent further damage.
