The city’s labor collectives met production goals under challenging circumstances. Skilled laborers, men, were called up. Numerous individuals voluntarily joined a militia. Teenagers and women took their place. Women made up 74% of all employees at the 12 Narcomat facilities under the department of machinebuilding industry of the Leningrad city committee of VKP(b), 94% at the medium machinebuilding industry plants, and 88% at the chemical and rubber industry plants. Bombings and shelling destroyed industries and took the lives of those who worked there. The fuel tank was almost empty. famine. The weary, feeble individuals labored to the edge of their capabilities.
