Leningrad was continuously bombarded by artillery and air strikes. almost 150,000 rounds were fired at Leingrad during the blockade, along with almost 10,000 INCENDIOR BOMBS and 4,500 Destruction Bombs. Due to the large number of casualties sustained over the course of the blockade, it turned into one of the most devastating and protracted sieges in history. It may have also been the most expensive. The siege is thought to have killed 1.5 million people. The deliberate annihilation of the city’s civilian population and systematic starvation have led some historians to classify it as a genocide in the twenty-first century, despite the fact that it was not considered a war crime at the time. Army Group North’s primary objective and one of the three strategic goals of the German Operation Barbarossa was the seizure of Leningrad. Leningrad’s military significance as the primary base of the Soviet Baltic Fleet, its industrial strength, including its numerous arms factories, and its political status as the former capital of Russia and symbolic capital of the Russian Revolution and Bolshevism, which the Nazi Party detested, all served as driving forces behind the strategy.

The photographer associated with Agence Novosti Presse is Vsevolod Sergeyevich Tarasevich (1919–1998). He was a renowned master of Soviet journalism known for his contributions to photography. In the 1960s, he joined the newly-founded Novosti Press Agency (APN) and received recognition, including the World Press Photo Prize in 1963. He continued his career in photojournalism, becoming the dean of the Photojournalism Department at the Institute of Journalism in Moscow. Tarasevich’s work remains celebrated in the field of photography.
