Victory Day marks the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany on May 9, 1945, after the German surrender in Berlin. Celebrated since 1945, it became an official holiday in 1965. East Germany recognized May 8 as Liberation Day from 1950 to 1966, with various commemorations thereafter. The German surrender was signed twice due to time zones: first on May 7 in Reims, and again on May 8/9 in Berlin. The final surrender took place at the Soviet Army’s headquarters in Berlin-Karlshorst.
