BW Photography during the Siege of Leningrad – 1941

An important part of the defense of the city was provided by the anti-aircraft units positioned all around St. Isaac’s Cathedral and across Leningrad. The main weaponry these units had was the ability to target planes trying to bomb the city. The defenders played a critical role in lessening the effects of the air raids while frequently operating in hazardous environments and facing continual danger. Even though St. Isaac’s Cathedral made it through the siege mostly unharmed, it was not spared. The edifice sustained some damage, but more importantly, it bore witness to the anguish and resiliency of the citizens and the city’s defenders. The areas surrounding the cathedral and perhaps even inside it were employed for a variety of military and civilian functions during the siege, such as observation positions and shelters.

The photograph remains in good condition, demonstrating resilience despite its age. Pinholes on every corners and chipped on the bottom left. Despite these minor issues, the photograph retains significant historical value, offering insights into the era and events it captures.
