Sud Aviation started developing the Puma, a mid-sized helicopter, in 1963 in response to a request by the French Army for a medium-sized, all-weather helicopter that could perform a variety of cargo-carrying tasks in addition to accommodating up to 20 soldiers. The decision was made to work with the French government to create an entirely new design for the helicopter. On April 15, 1965, the first of the two Puma prototypes took to the air; deliveries to the French Army started in early 1969.
