A miner from the Soviet Union, Alexei Grigoryevich Stakhanov was a member of the CPSU (1936) and a Hero of Socialist Labour (1970). In 1935, he rose to fame as a participant in the Stakhanovite movement, an effort to boost labor productivity and prove the superiority of the socialist economic system. Born in 1906 in the village of Lugovaya (now in Izmalkovsky District), Alexei Stakhanov was raised in the Livensky Uezd of the Orel Governorate of the Russian Empire. In Kadiivka (Donbas), he started working in a mine named “Tsentralnaia-Irmino” (literally, Central Irmino) in his early 20s. Stakhanov trained to operate a jackhammer in 1933.
