Vintage Original B&W Photo, a Play called “La Machine Infernale” 1958

Based on the Greek myth of Oedipus, Jean Cocteau’s play The Infernal Machine, also known as La Machine Infernale, was first performed on April 10, 1934 at the Théâtre Louis Jouvet in Paris, France, directed by Louis Jouvet. Christian Bérard designed the costumes and scene. Albert Bermel’s translation of The Infernal Machine was first presented on February 3, 1958, at the Phoenix Theatre in New York, directed by Herbert Berghof and featuring scenery by Ming Cho Lee, costumes by Alvin Colt, and lighting by Tharon Musser.

The Photography is in a Fair Condition. Despite the large crease and other signs of moderate wear and tear, the photograph retains its vintage appeal, which adds to its charm and historical significance. Preserving such artifacts allows us to appreciate the stories they hold and the contexts in which they were created. Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française (RTF), established on February 9, 1949, was the French national public broadcaster television organization. It replaced the post-war “Radiodiffusion Française” (RDF), founded in 1945 to replace Radiodiffusion Nationale (RN), created in 1939. RTF was both state-owned and state-controlled, with budgets set by the French National Assembly under the direction of the Ministry of Information. RTF experienced fierce competition from French-speaking stations in neighboring countries. In 1964, RTF was replaced by the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF), which operated until the end of 1974
