Johnson began with the drums and then switched to the saxophone. He was a part of a group led by Chuck Finney in St. Louis when he started his professional career. Up until the draft intervened, he was a student at Wilberforce University. He performed in bands with Ernie Fields, Tiny Bradshaw, and Andy Kirk following his military service. He recorded records for Decca Records with the Kirk orchestra. Ben Webster is cited by him as his main inspiration. One of the band members started calling Johnson “Candy” because he liked candy better than drinking. He formed the Peppermint Sticks band while he was living in Detroit. A fellow musician recollected that the group donned outfits striped like candy, and occasionally Johnson would throw peppermint sticks to the audience.
