Pia Degermark’s career seemed secure when director Bo Widerberg cast her in the lead role of Elvira Madigan (1967), which made its Cannes premiere and received critical and commercial acclaim. Widerberg first saw the teenage Pia Degermark in a newspaper photo, dancing at a party with the Swedish Crown Prince Carl Gustaf (later King Carl XVI Gustaf). Degermark was lauded as the “new Ingrid Bergman” and offers came flooding in. Nonetheless, she wed producer Pier A. Caminnecci in 1971 (she starred in his 1971 picture The Vampire Happening). Cesare was the son of the marriage, which ended in divorce two years later. After that, Degermark immigrated to the US, but she later returned to her native Sweden in 1979, suffering from anorexia and in critical condition. After completing her acting career, she formed the “Alfta” group, which is committed to helping other women who are afflicted with the illness. After she was eventually sued and charged with making false statements, the group disintegrated. Around this time, Degermark developed a heroin addiction and became homeless. Desperate to earn money, she started writing fake checks. Eventually, she was taken into custody and sent to the state penitentiary in Stockholm.
