The Dubs are an American doo wop vocal group formed in 1956, best known for their songs “Could This Be Magic”, “Don’t Ask Me to Be Lonely”, and “Chapel of Dreams”. The Dubs were established by the union of two short-lived singing ensembles from Harlem, New York, The Five Wings and The Scale-Tones. Jackie Rue (lead, subsequently of Jackie and the Starlites), Frank Edwards (tenor), Billy Carlisle (second tenor), Melvin Flood (baritone), and Tommy Grate (bass) were members of the up-and-coming ensemble The Five Wings (formerly “The 5 Stars”). They recorded for King Records in 1955, but when they didn’t find success, the group splintered. Rue, Flood, and Edwards left, Kenny “Butch” Hamilton joined, and Carlisle’s nephew Richard Blandon joined shortly after in the aftermath of his release from the United States Air Force. Meanwhile, James “Jake” Miller and Thomas Gardner had founded The Scale-Tones, to which they had added Cleveland Still (lead), James Montgomery, and Don Archer. In early 1956, they released one single on the Jay-Dee label.
