Vintage Original B&W Photo, Ballet Performing the Swan Lake – 1877

Ballet’s appeal skyrocketed in Russia, where Russian choreographers and composers elevated the art form to unprecedented heights in the last half of the 1800s. Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and The Nutcracker, choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, exemplify the pinnacle of classical ballet. The focus of the ballets shifted to showcasing the complete range of classical technique, including turn-out (the outward rotation of the legs from the hip), high extensions, pointe work, and precision in movement. The narrative was choreographed to include variations, which are intricate sections that showcase difficult steps, jumps, and turns. The romantic tutu was developed at this time, while the classical tutu, which was considerably stiffer and shorter, showed off a ballerina’s legs and the complexity of her footwork and movement.
