Vintage Original B&W Photo, Jean-Jacques Beineix during the making of “The Moon in the Gutter” – 1983

Director Jean-Jacques Beineix states in the American DVD release that he approached Gaumont, the film’s production company, about releasing The Moon in the Gutter in a similar manner following the publication of the extended three-hour DVD version director’s cut of Betty Blue. A studio official subsequently informed him, regretfully, that in this instance, a recut for an extended release was not feasible. It was discovered that Gaumont had thought the movie would be received so poorly at first that all of the extra material and doubles had been burned to free up room in the movie vaults.
