A theatrical co-production grew out of Marcel Maréchal’s admiration for Patrice Chéreau, the young director of the Sartrouville theater whom he describes as “one of the rare current directors worthy of the name.” Rehearsals for a new “Dom Juan,” which had begun in Sartrouville, therefore came to a conclusion at the Théâtre du Huitième: on January 3, 1969, the play began a career in Lyon before being taken to the stage in the Paris suburbs.
