Catherine, the sister of Gérard, committed suicide after being sexually assaulted in Marseille’s sleazy port area, believing that her blood in a gutter reflects the moon. The title alludes to the contrast between a celestial object and the impure underworld, where its light seems so out of place, in a poetic metaphor. But Nastassja Kinski’s elegant character Loretta Channing, who moves from an affluent hillside area to the seedy port district and slumbers with the macho stevedore Gérard Delmas, is a perfect example of how this metaphor works.
