The Māori name for Mount Te Aroha is where the term Te Aroha originates. One story has Rāhiri, the eponymous ancestor of Ngāti Rāhiri Tumutumu, climbing the mountain and feeling love (aroha) for his homeland that he saw in the distance. The town is officially called Te Aroha-a-uta, which translates to “love flowing inland” from the word uta, which means “inland.” According to some Tainui customs, Rakataura, a tohunga of the Tainui waka, was among the first individuals to depart from the waka and settle at Rarotonga, also known as Mount Smart. Rakataura left Tāmaki Makaurau and headed south after some time, but his wife Kahukeke passed away in transit. After settling at Te Aroha, Rakataura named the region after his love for Kahukeke.
