Vintage Original B&W Photo, Raymond Devos in Paris – 1966

French comic, clown, and stand-up comedian Raymond Devos was born. His intricate wordplay and bizarre humor are what make him most famous. When Devos started developing his own one-man shows and started playing as Maurice Chevalier’s opening act in the 1950s, his career really took off. He was primarily known for his fluency in French, even if his act still included aspects from his early days as a clown, such as juggling. In the Francophone world, he was highly respected for his distinct style of surreal humor and clever puns. Alejandro Jodorowsky’s surrealist 1957 debut short film Les têtes interverties, a mime adaptation of Thomas Mann’s 1940 drama The Transposed Heads, features Devos as a central role.
