Vintage Original B&W Photo, Soviet and Polish soldiers in liberated Warsaw in 1944

The Warsaw Uprising, often referred to as the August Uprising, was a significant Polish underground resistance movement during World War II that aimed to free Warsaw from German occupation. It took place soon after the war ended. The Polish resistance Home Army led it, and it took place in the summer of 1944. The rebellion was planned to take place just as the German army was leaving Poland in front of the Soviet assault. Combat operations were paused by the Red Army as it approached the city’s eastern suburbs, giving the Germans the opportunity to reorganize, overcome the Polish resistance, and then demolish the city as payback. For sixty-three days, the Uprising was waged without much outside assistance. It was the biggest military action any resistance movement in Europe had taken during World War II.
