Vintage Original B&W Photo, The Arena of Nimes in Southern France – 1981

A Roman amphitheater located in Nîmes, southern France, is known as the Arena of Nîmes (French: Arènes de Nîmes). Erected in 100 CE, not too long after Rome’s Colosseum, this Roman amphitheater stands as one of the best-preserved structures worldwide. With an arena of 68 by 38 meters (223 by 125 feet), it is 133 meters (436 feet) long and 101 meters (331 feet) broad. With two levels and sixty arcades per storey, the outside facade is 69 feet (21 meters) high. Out of the 400 Roman amphitheaters still standing, it is one of the 20 biggest. When the structure was built in the Roman era, it could accommodate 24,000 spectators who were arranged across 34 terrace tiers that were split into four independent areas, or maeniana.
