Midway through November 1942, Soviet forces launched a counteroffensive against the Germans arrayed at Stalingrad, rapidly encircling an entire German army, numbering over 220,000 soldiers. The German forces that survived, numbering only about 91,000 soldiers, surrendered in February 1943, following months of fierce fighting and heavy casualties. Following the victory at Stalingrad, the Soviet army continued to be on the offensive, liberating most of the Ukraine, virtually all of Russia, and eastern Belorussia in 1943. After a run of German wins in the summer of 1942, the struggle for Stalingrad proved to be a crucial psychological turning point that marked the start of the protracted retreat westward.
