Grimault and well-known French poet and screenwriter Jacques Prévert worked together to create the movie, which was first titled La Bergère et le Ramoneur (“The shepherdess and the chimney sweep”; partly based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale of the same name). However, the movie’s production abruptly came to an end, and its producer released it in 1952 without Grimault’s or Prévert’s consent. In the 1960s and 1970s, Grimault was able to produce a new version of the movie as they had intended because they had acquired the rights to it. More than 30 years after the start of production, the movie was finished.
