Mireille Mathieu was destined to be a singer from the start. Her professional career began on November 21, 1965, and for more than 40 years, as she herself would put it, has been “a fairy tale come true.” Born in Avignon, the oldest of Marcelle and Roger Mathieu’s 14 children, Mireille made her stage debut at Midnight Mass when she was just 4 years old. Her father had likewise dreamed of singing, using his tenor voice as a stonecutter for the cemetery. Mireille used to save her factory job earnings as a child to pay for singing lessons. Mireille was admitted as a pupil by Laure Collière, her voice instructor. In her autobiography, “Mon Credo,” she begged God to “create a miracle” at a difficult moment for her to escape destitution. When Mireille competed in the TV series “Jeu de la Chance” and won first place, Johnny Stark, the manager of French pop singer Johnny Hallyday, became aware of her captivating vocal beauty in the early 1960s. She eventually signed a deal with the American business mogul, who served as her mentor. Mireille did incredibly well and was well on her path to success after putting in a lot of effort and experiencing numerous nights when she could only get four hours of sleep before a show. Her 1965 appearance at the Paris Olympia ignited her recording connection with Barclay Records, where her debut album swiftly sold over a million copies! She was soon heralded as the new Édith Piaf!
