Robert Arnaut was a Provence-born French troubadour from the 13th century who wrote lyric poetry and composed music, so advancing the tradition of courtly love. He was a troubadour, a member of a literary and cultural movement that sprang out of the Occitan-speaking areas of southern France in the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. Lyric poetry, which frequently focused on themes of chivalry and the idealistic, unachievable love of a knight for a noblewoman, was composed and performed by troubadours.
