June 22, 1941 – May 9, 1945: Romania was a combatant in the Second World War. From August 22, 1944, the fascist Antonescu regime fought on the Axis, while two divisions, “Tudor Vladimirescu” and “Horia-Cloșca-Crisan,” as well as some fleet units and aviators, fought on the Allied side. From August 23, 1944, onward, the entire country sided with the Allies. With the exception of Germany 2, Romanian forces fighting alongside the Germans against the USSR numbered 473,000, making them the largest contingent among the Axis. The Romanian land forces moved eastward and southwest of Astrakhan, Kalmykia, during their military operations against the USSR in the fall of 1942. About 25% of the 139,000 Romanian soldiers who surrendered or were captured at Stalingrad joined the “Vladimescu,” “Horea, Cloșca, and Crișan” divisions, while half of them continued the war in the Romanian army when Romania joined the Allies , the last quarter remains and dies in captivity.
