The Soviet Armenia, sometimes known as “the Second Republic,” was founded as the first Republic of Armenia crumbled under the weight of Russian Bolsheviks and Turkish Kemalists. As the name suggests, Soviet Armenia was intended to be governed by “Soviets,” or councils of farmers and laborers. The Supreme Council was the name of the Soviet Armenia’s elective legislature. The five-year tenure of the 340 members of the Supreme Council was chosen by majoritarian district elections. During the Soviet era, the Communist leadership made all of the decisions, hence the Supreme Council mostly served as a formal body.
The photograph remains in good condition, demonstrating resilience despite its age. The corners show signs of wear, characteristic of storage and handling. Notably, there is a large crease on the top right corner. This crease is prominent but does not affect the central imagery of the photograph.
