Vintage Original B&W Photo, the Surrender of Japan – 1945

The official Instrument of Surrender, which was drafted by the War Department and authorized by President Harry S. Truman, was signed by Japanese delegates on September 2, 1945. In eight succinct paragraphs, it outlined Japan’s total surrender. The first line of the statement, “We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan,” indicated how much weight the Americans who wrote it placed on the Emperor’s position. The succinct second paragraph addressed the main points of contention: “We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under Japanese control wherever situated.”
