According to the Leningraders’ lexicon, Finlyandsky Station and Lenin Square constitute the Valley of Death. There started the route on Lake Ladoga’s ice that would later earn the moniker “Road of Life.” Food was transported to besieged Leningrad via this route, enabling the locals to resist. As soon as the Nazis learned about the ice path, they began daily bombings of its terminus. As a result, a portion of the important road was dubbed Death Valley.

The photographer associated with Agence Novosti Presse is Vsevolod Sergeyevich Tarasevich (1919–1998). He was a renowned master of Soviet journalism known for his contributions to photography. Tarasevich began his career as a student photographer and later became a photo correspondent during World War II. In the 1960s, he joined the newly-founded Novosti Press Agency (APN) and received recognition, including the World Press Photo Prize in 1963. He continued his career in photojournalism, becoming the dean of the Photojournalism Department at the Institute of Journalism in Moscow. Tarasevich’s work remains celebrated in the field of photography.
