They meet up with the 1st Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, a helicopter-borne air assault unit of the elite 1st Cavalry Division under Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore, before they get to the coastal mouth of the Nùng to talk about a safe entry into the river. Kilgore doesn’t pay attention at first because he hasn’t heard about their assignment from the usual sources. However, after learning that Lance is a well-known surfer, he gets even more interested. Kilgore, a passionate surfer, consents to lead them via the Viet Cong-controlled coastal mouth of the Nùng. The helicopter squadron launches a napalm strike at dawn while blasting “Ride of the Valkyries” over the speakers.
