Three stories entwined. In the Ardennes woodland, Count Forbek begins construction on an amazing castle on the eve of the First World War. He uses it to brainwash his friends—including his former fiancée Livia and her husband—in order to establish a utopian society after the conflict. The castle is being utilized as a substitute school and hosts an educational conference during the summer months. Even though Walter Guarini, the major speaker, is clearly interested in Elisabeth, the American Nora Winkle bets Claudine that Robert Dufresne would persuade the earnest public school teacher into his bed. In the meantime, the kids spending the holidays at the castle create their own myth from the Middle Ages about releasing prisoners from the dungeons.
