Vintage Original Photo, The Monument to the Union of Ukraine with Russia “Together Forever” – 1961

The contentious “Together Forever” Monument to the Union of Ukraine with Russia was built in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. The image showed a man and a woman holding hands with the Russian and Ukrainian flags entwined over them. Known for his pro-Russian stance, Viktor Yanukovych was the president when the memorial was unveiled in 2012. The monument was taken down in 2015 as hostilities between Russia and Ukraine escalated. The Donetsk People’s Republic is a self-declared separatist organization backed by Russia. Its removal was interpreted as a symbolic act meant to represent the ongoing violence in the region as well as the strained relations between Russia and Ukraine.
