French instructor Bertrand Barabi (Henri Guybet) serves as the deputy headmaster of a provincial school. He was a member of his city’s literary circles, and as one of the institution’s teachers, his students despise him. Bertrand Barabi lives for the French lecturer Miss Thuillier. His lonely neighbor, piano teacher Dominique Benech (Claude Jade), who harbors soft feelings for him, begs him to coach her son Michel (Mathieu Vermesh). Dominique, inspired by a passage Bertrand wrote, pushes him to compose “Le Pion” (The Pawn).
