Daniel Vigne helmed the 1982 French historical drama film The Return of Martin Guerre, which starred Gérard Depardieu. It was based on an impersonation case involving Martin Guerre that occurred in 16th-century France. The movie tells the story of Martin Guerre, a real-life historical figure who left his young wife behind in a little French village to go and fight in a war. After a span of eight or nine years, Depardieu’s character Martin reappears to carry on with his life. Because he is aware of the personal facts of his previous life, the wife, family, and friends immediately acknowledge and embrace the man.
